Wonder Woman #5

In this issue, we get to meet Poseidon,

Xena's Poseidon was a cutting edge special effects man of water!

Cerberus,

Puppy style?

Hades,

Wearing a crown of shit.

and Lennox.

He's the God of Brawling. Or one of Zeus's bastards.

Lennox shows up because he knows stuff. He can hear things on the wind. Maybe that's a clue to who he is but I'm not getting it! Maybe if I had a Scooby Snack it would come to me.

So Lennox sends Diana to meet with Poseidon while he and Hermes head into the sewers to find Hades. I'm not sure why Poseidon lives in the Thames and Hades lives in the London Underground wearing dripping wax or watery bowel movements over his eyes.

The comic begins with one of Poseidon's sea horses found dead in the Thames. Perhaps Poseidon and Hades are already duking it out to become king of Olympus?

We're also introduce to Tony Atkins in this issue. He's the new artist. Here's his version of Wonder Woman:

I miss Cliff Chiang. I hope this is only temporary.

I'm not sure what Wonder Woman's plan is. She wants to protect Zola. That's her main goal. But now that Hera has turned the Amazons into snakes, she also wants to confront Hera. That's when Lennox appears to offer some thoughts. Or a different plan. Azzarello doesn't give us their whole conversation over breakfast although we get some pieces in flashbacks as Wonder Woman and Zola walk around London.

Apparently Lennox told Diana where she could meet Poseidon. It may be his plan (for his own selfish reasons, probably) to have Diana convince Poseidon that Hera is trying to take the throne of Olympus. And maybe Lennox went to see Hades to start the same sort of Strife. This way, Hera doesn't have time to hunt down Zola or Diana because she's busy with her in-laws. Or inbred-laws? That God stuff is confusing.

Final note: I'm not sure why they decided to go with the cover they did. Covers rarely represent action that actually takes place within a book. But showing Wonder Woman with Aquaman's trident? Strange. Is this a Major Cross-Over Event?!

  1. Wonder Woman is looking just a lit-tle Jay Leno-y in the last frame. I'd also like to vote for Hades wearing a crown of snot.

  2. How's the writing? Azzarello seemingly went from amazing (first three quarters of 100 Bullets) to just okay a few years back.

    1. I never did finish 100 Bullets although I intend to at some point. The writing in this is really well done. Great dialogue and it doesn't rely on the wacky unsure of what point of time or reference narration boxes.
